We kicked off Buffalo Days weekend with Paint the Town Thursday night. Tropical Sno Two Rivers was yummy and the kids artwork was beautiful.
This is where the party starts so grab your friends and come to Buffalo Days! The Buffalo burgers and pork chop sandwiches are the best. Elephant ears, pizza and lemonade shake ups are always a crowd favorite. There are many activities to keep the kids entertained and adults busy. Buffalo Days is a 3-day event and Fun for All ages. Families can look forward to the side walk chalk painting, craft fair, Parade, games enjoy watching the local firefighters water fight. Adults can also enjoy the beer garden and live music.

You can feel it in the air. You can see it in the faces of the committee members. You start to notice a change in the flow of traffic throughout town. Side by sides, 4 wheelers, and golf carts zipping up and down our streets. The top of the big tent becomes visible from Main Street and the American flag flutters in the breeze high on top of a crane over LaMoille. With the threat of Covid starting to be put behind us, things have finally taken on an air of normalcy. Families and friends gather and celebrate the homecoming of old classmates and neighbors of years past. Our parade still proudly represents our farming lifestyle with tractors and a salute to our local firemen and fire departments as they show off their town’s fire trucks. Our girls still wave from vehicles with signs proudly naming this year's Prairie Princess winners and toddlers sitting on parent’s laps being honored as our Baby Buffs for 2022. Our school band still marches to their music with instruments gleaming. LaMoille is steeped in tradition, as most small towns are. We’ve come to expect a food tent with, what else… a buffalo burger on the menu. We anticipate the annual water fights being set up on one of the town streets. Through the years we’ve watched our men and now our sons (and daughters!) vie for the bragging rights of finishing in first place as the kids splash in the water puddles. We watched our little ones enjoy small town living in bouncy houses, face painting and bubble machines. We gathered in our local streets and yards as they lit up the sky with fireworks Friday evening. We know the boys in the bands at the beer tent as summer nights are filled with music and laughter. We proudly wear our shirts advertising this years theme, Sweet Home LaMoille. We gather, we socialize, and we laugh with friends we’ve known our entire lives. This year was no exception. We listened and recalled our history as Newt Lundquist spoke to us about the beginning of Buffalo Days and the faces and names that started our traditional summer festival. We nodded in acknowledgment as Shelly Stouffer took us through the current years of Buffalo Days and what it took to regenerate this 3 day event after years without it. You could feel the pride of a small town in knowing the scholarships that were handed out over the years and the money being put back into our very own town with the money raised during these weekends. We watched as bids came in for items being sold in our live auction, another annual event... hundreds of dollars being given by LaMoille families and surrounding areas. We listened in awe as money was donated by $500 increments from our own townspeople for new asphalt to be laid in our little town park. When people say, “it takes a village”, they have no idea how representative that is of our own small town. From the committees and the volunteers that make this weekend a success, to the businesses that donate money and food, and to the public who comes out and opens their wallets so generously to give back to our town.. we all say thank you and maybe swell a bit with pride for Sweet Home LaMoille . |

It was a year like no other. Like nothing any of us have ever experienced in our life time or hope to again. Where our little community slowly retreated back into our homes and family and friends were limited to seeing each other through electronic devices and phone calls and hugs were shunned and deemed unsafe. Where new terms were made into main stream language… social distance. Quarantine…Covid19. Don’t get me wrong. The entire world was fighting the same fight with their own sorrows and losses. But in a town of 750 people, we are all family with out the blood ties. Even one loss will ricochet through our streets. It may not have been our mother, or brother, or sibling. But we all grieve with you. We were not left unaffected. Everyone one of us have felt the ache of a life cut short during this bizarre time. Yet we were told we could not gather, we could not console or hug. How do you do that in a town this small where their family is like your own? Yet we are strong and we trudge on. Not only did our little town feel the loss of lives, we missed out on events… proms, homecomings, graduations. And Buffalo Days. Buffalo Days is more than a tent.. a parade, a princess. It is pride for your hometown. It is days and weeks of work..from the tireless committees that organize this weekend right down to the many volunteers that carry out their plans. To say this year was a challenge seems to downplay all the efforts made to bring you Buffalo Days 2021. Yet they pulled it off. And you showed up. Our new park is another year older. The trees planted in memory of our loved ones, another year taller. New benches have been added. Flowers are blooming bright in the sunlight. Our flag is still waving in the breeze. We came together as our town always does. I watched people hugging and holding on tight to old friends they haven’t seen in so long. I saw our kids playing in the heat and sun and our local firefighters battling it out once again to push a barrel down the line. I watched as the volunteers served us food and drinks and our new princesses sparkled in their tiaras. Through all this, we felt the memories of those we lost quietly drifting among us. This year’s theme was, “Blame It All On Our Roots.” How appropriate. Our roots run deep in this town. In any little town. You can make us social distance behind masks and force us not to gather. You can take away all our events and force us inside. But it's over.. in a big way, it's over. You came out.. you laughed, you hugged. You gathered with friends and family. You sold an old sail boat and an empty beer can along with other items and raised $30,000 in an auction like no other! Money that is donated back into our own town by our Buffalo Days organization. Go ahead… laugh at small town living and their people, but come out next year and watch us light up our town with fireworks. Blame it all on our roots, after all. You did it again. You laughed, you danced, you sang! You cheered on parade participants, bed racers, water fighters, our princesses. You applauded our wings winners, our auction bidders, our donators of money and time. You marveled at the stunning aerial view of our beautiful town and the fireworks that sparkled over it. LaMoille Fireman Water fights- For those who have never experienced an old fashioned fire department water fight, let me give you a short idea of the game.Various town fire departments and the crew of firemen or women compete against each other. A steady arm and good aim is the key to this sport. The object of the game is use the water to direct the ball over the line of the other team.
A regulation water ball is suspended on wire above the street on a very strong cable. A pully is attached to the ball so it can slide easily when the water pressure hits it. Each fireman directs the stream of water to push that ball over the line. There is 120lbs of pressure coming from the 2 1/2” hose. The first one to push that ball across the other team line wins. They have double eliminations, so a person can fight their way back from a loss. Then they switch ends and do it again. There is a time limit so the winner declared is the one closest to the others line. This entertainment can go on all day long!
Grab your lawn chair and relax and enjoy the day of water fights. This fun event is on Saturday afternoon @ 1pm. (usually ending around 5 or 6pm.)
